day 244: 4.24 out of 99

I got curious and looked it up — my Apple developer account renewal is July 29th. Which means I first registered around the same time last year. I didn't actually launch Requote until early November, so even after deciding I was ready, it took another three months. But that aside — the thought I had when I saw that date: I want to at least earn back the developer account fee from my apps by then. It's $99 in the US. In Korea it's ₩129,000. It's late March now — exactly four months to go. After fees, I've made $4.24 so far. 4.24 out of 99. Just need to fill $99 in four months. Not looking promising, to put it gently.

So I set a target for apps — might as well set one for YouTube too. Subscribers and watch time are the first things that come to mind. I started the channel on December 5th last year, so a one-year mark feels like a natural deadline. What should I aim for by December 5th, 2026? Subscribers are completely unpredictable, so I feel like I can't set any meaningful goal there. Watch time just passed 100 hours, and there are about 8 months left. If 100 hours took 4 months, simple math says I could add another 200. That would put me at 300. YouTube monetization requires 4,000 hours. So... if I hope for some nonlinear growth — in the good way — maybe I could aim for 400 hours? That would at least get me to 10% of the threshold. Like the app goal, it's the kind of target that feels like it could happen but probably won't.

On to reading. First, a deadline. The first quarter of the year is just about to end, so the end of the first half feels right. June 30th. How many books should I aim for by then? Requote has gotten me to read more than I used to, but not as much as I'd like. Right now my Requote library shows 27 finished and 20 reading. If I get finished to 50 in the next three months, that's over 7 books a month. Not impossible, not easy either. Locking it in.

And lastly, the one that might matter most. Before I move, I want to log every book I own into sumof. Organizing books was one of the main reasons I built the app, but I've only been using it for my fridge. Books are a bigger job, so I kept putting it off — always telling myself I'd get to it. My wrist pain hasn't helped either. But the move is coming up fast, and there's nowhere left to retreat.

I think it's safe to say this project is officially a failure. Pricing, features, design — I could list a hundred things that went wrong, but if no one's sticking around to use the app, there's not much else to explain. It's my first app, so I'm attached to it, and it was something I genuinely needed — but if the market says no, then as a product, it failed. Can't argue with that. I thought maybe there'd be other obsessive text-block collectors out there who'd want something like this....

day 266: still 4.24 out of 99

It's been 22 days since I set those targets. Quick check-in. App revenue is still $4.24. Same number, same two apps behind it. Requote is subscription-based, so downloads don't move the number unless someone converts — a few people downloaded it, none subscribed. Sumof is paid upfront, so no downloads means no revenue, and there were no downloads. Two different shapes of nothing, adding up to the same $4.24. YouTube went faster than I expected. Watch time went from 100 hours to 220. Subscribers went from 15 to 25. Back on March 30th I did the math and figured I might add another 200 hours by December — at this pace I'd pass that, which would be nice, but I've been doing this long enough to know these things don't move in straight lines. 10 new subscribers in 22 days is a lot for me. Thank you. Books: 27 to 30. I was away for about ten days between the move and a trip, so I didn't read much. 50 by June 30th is still on the table. And sumof. I wanted to log all my...
